Nigeria has signed and ratified the statutes of the International Criminal Court, the UN permanent judicial body capable of trying individuals for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
In a meeting with a Hands Off Cain delegation in Abuja in October 2002, President Olusegun Obasanjo said: "As President I am committed to saving lives and not eliminating them". He stated that he was committed to fighting to save lives and would continue the campaign "here in our country and internationally." His pledge was reaffirmed in a meeting with another HOC delegation in August 2003.
