No executions have taken place since July 1993, when 12 prisoners who had been convicted of armed robbery or murder were executed by firing squad. Executions may also be carried out by hanging but Ghana's last hanging was performed in 1968.
In 1997, President Jerry John Rawlings reviewed the cases of condemned prisoners who were old or ill and had served ten years or more on death row. He commuted 15 of their sentences to life imprisonment, and set seven free.
In July 2003, President John Agyekum Kufuor commuted the death sentences of 179 people who had served at least 10 years on death row and another two who had exhibited exemplary conduct, to life imprisonment.
The commutations were included in the presidential amnesty covering thousands of prisoners granted by the President on the recommendations of the Prisons Service Council and in consultation with the Council of State.
