Noel Thomas and Abdool Saleem Yassin convicted of killing Yassin's younger brother Abdool Kaleem Yassin in March 1987 in western Essequibo County, had death warrants read to them on September 7 and were scheduled to hang early on September 11, but a team of new attorneys led by prominent lawyer Nigel Hughes persuaded Justice Winston Moore to grant a temporary stay of execution on the night of September 9. The judge signed the legal papers at his home. The lawyers argued that the men had suffered enough by being held on death row for 12 years. They also said the men did not get a hearing by the country's Mercy Committee. President Bharrat Jagdeo signed their death warrants in August.
