On 12 November 1998, Kurd leader Abdullah Ocalan, accompanied by Refounded Communist deputy Ramon Mantovani, landed at Fiumicino Airport in Rome on a flight from Russia. After being recognized in Customs, he was arrested, with a warrant issued by Germany - which has never asked for his extradition - and another issued by Turkey - where he was not extradited because he would have risked the death penalty in that country.
