On April 1, the Zhytomyr Regional Court handed Anatoliy Onopriyenko the expected death sentence. Onopriyenko, who murdered 52 people from 1989 to 1996, would remain in solitary confinement at a Zhytomyr prison while President Kuchma considered his appeal. It was unlikely that Onopriyenko would face execution in the foreseeable future, due to Ukraine's moratorium on capital punishment.
