In April, according to a royal decree, Oman introduced the death penalty for drug traffickers and users in a move mainly aimed at halting the use of the Sultanate as a trans-shipment point for drug smugglers. "People found guilty of importing, exporting, producing, re-selling or consuming drugs could face the death penalty, or jail sentences of up to 25 years and a minimum fine of $64,000," the decree states. Habitual offenders among drug traffickers or consumers will automatically be sentenced to death under the new law.
