On April 12, King Mswati III ruled out the abolition of the death sentence in Swaziland saying the threat that necessitated capital punishment in the country still existed and although no hangings had taken place in the country in the past 18 years, the sentence had acted as an effective deterrent. The country, he said, should concentrate more on fighting crime than lobbying for the abolition of capital punishment.
