On April 3, the No. 1 Intermediate People's Court in Chongqing, a city in southwestern China, sentenced Lin Shiyuan, 37, to death for accepting bribes and for dereliction of duty. This caused the January 4 collapse of the 3-year-old bridge outside Chongqing, killing at least 40 people and injuring 14. It was one of China's worst accidents blamed on shoddy construction.
