On April 7, Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Haryono said on the occasion of the 21st meeting of ASEAN Senior Officials on Drug Matters that ASEAN members must unite to eradicate the circulation of, and trade in, any types of narcotics. To that end, countries in the region must follow the example of Malaysia which had imposed the death sentence on drug traffickers, and had succeeded in keeping down the number of drug abuses compared with other ASEAN countries which imposed lesser penalties on drug traffickers.
