On August 24, District Attorney Pete Skandalakis said he would seek the death penalty for Jeffrey McGee, a New York man accused of killing a Villa Rica police officer. McGee, 33, was arrested February 4 inside a Toronto doughnut shop and was returned to Georgia on April 30. Canada, which abolished the death penalty in 1976, has extradited other defendants eligible for capital punishment back to the United States without guarantees that they will not be executed.
