On August 6, Eletise Leafa Vitale, the 34-year-old son of a Samoan cabinet minister, was given a mandatory death sentence for admitting to killing Works Minister Luagalau Levaulu Kamu, in Apia's Supreme Court. His father, Leafa Vitale, who was Minister of Women's Affairs until being sacked, and former Communications Minister Toi Aukuso have also been charged with the murder. Kamu was killed on July 18 with a single shot in the back at a social function marking the 20th anniversary of the founding of the ruling Human Rights Protection Party.
