On December 22, hundreds of mourners attending American musician Val Pringle's memorial service near Maseru applauded Lesotho Foreign Minister Tom Thabane when he said Pringle's killers would hang. Pringle, 63, was attacked and killed by an armed gang in his home in Thuathe Plateau near Maseru. Thabane said the Lesotho Government had mounted a massive drive against lawlessness and that the investigations into his murder had so far been successful, with a 26-year-old man having been arrested. He said it was Lesotho's sovereign right to maintain a death penalty so that those who killed were punished by hanging.
