On February 17, the Supreme Court of Pakistan in a historic verdict declared the constitution of military trial courts and punishments awarded by them as unconstitutional. These courts were first set up on December 5, 1998, and, during the 10 weeks of their operation, awarded the death penalty to 13 individuals, of whom two were hanged. The Supreme Court order does not elaborate on death sentences being awarded to children by anti-terrorist courts, as such cases will now go to civilian courts.
