On February 18, the House of Representatives unanimously voted for the abolition of the death penalty under domestic law. The death penalty was maintained only for certain military offenses: treason and piracy. The government immediately proceeded to complete the necessary legislative modifications. The competent authorities were contemplating the amendment of the context of the military offenses for which capital punishment is retained so as to enable the Republic to become a party to Protocol No. 6. of the European Convention on Human Rights.
