On January 9, Sun Maobeng, former governor of the Ningbo city branch of the People's Bank of China, was handed a suspended death sentence for bribery (more than $80,000) by a court in southeastern Zhejiang Province. This sentence came less than two months before the National People's Congress opened its annual session in Beijing, during which the delegates were expected to challenge the authorities on their anti-graft campaign.
