On July 14, the Higher People's Court of South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region announced the result of its second-instance trial of Li Chenglong, former deputy mayor of Guigang City, and upheld a lower court ruling of the death penalty. He was also stripped of all political rights, fined 100,000 yuan ($12,000) worth of personal property, and had to return all the money and gifts he received as bribes. The Intermediate People's Court in the city of Yulin gave him the death penalty on January 27, 1999, and Li appealed to the higher people's court, which investigated further before upholding the original finding.
