On July 15, Amnesty International called on Malawi President Bakili Muluzi to take bold steps to scrap the death penalty from the country's statute books. In a letter, Amnesty said it welcomed Muluzi's refusal for the past five years to endorse the death penalty.Chief Commissioner Of Prisons Liwewe Mahamudu said Muluzi refused to append his signature to 42 death warrants in June alone. "Following that development, the death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment," he added. Although Muluzi has refused to sign any death warrant, the debate on whether Malawi should do away with the death sentence is still inconclusive.
