On June 25, the German Presidency of the European Union stressed the fact that at least 7 people had been put to death in Cuba since the beginning of the year. "Some of these executions were carried out in the greatest secrecy," the European Presidency affirmed while stating its position on the issue, which can be seen as an appeal to the Havana authorities to at least suspend executions and to accede to the International Covenant on Political and Civil Rights, which provides for the death penalty only in the case of very serious crimes.
