On June 30, Spanish Premier José Maria Aznar, on a visit to Ecuador, said he personally was "against" the death penalty in general and that he had said as much to Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit. Aznar also said that it was nevertheless necessary to proceed with caution in order not to upset Turkey. "In the end, reaching one's objectives is what counts. It's easy to carry out propaganda," affirmed the head of the Spanish Government. He also stressed that the Spanish Foreign Minister, Abel Matutes, had written to his Turkish counterpart, Ismail Cem, concerning the Abdullah Ocalan case, and the Spanish Parliament had unanimously adopted a resolution against Ocalan's execution.
