On June 30, the Chairman of Kazakhstan's (opposition) Azamat party, Galym Abilsiitov said they do not support the imposition of the death penalty on the Kurdish leader, Abdullah Ocalan. Expressing this view, Abilsiitov noted that the problem of the Kurdish people needs to be resolved at the level of the international community, without applying double standards. Abilsiitov expressed the view that the President of Turkey, Suleyman Demirel, would quash Ocalan's death sentence, commuting it to life imprisonment. The leader of Azamat said that Turkey as a European country must listen to the opinion of European structures, in particular the OSCE, which are against the death penalty on principle.
