On November 2, Saint Lucia's Ambassador Julian R. Hunte, speaking at the Third Committee of the General Assembly (human rights) under item 116a (death penalty), said: "It is very disturbing that the very institution that we entrusted with the protection of our sovereignty is allowing a group of more powerful nations to challenge the Constitution of our country, an independent state. Saint Lucia will defend its Constitution and the right of its people to choose their values and rule of law, with the same zeal that we fought for our independence. We will not allow Europe or the UN to undermine our sovereignty and freedom to choose, or the Constitution of our country, particularly on matters of national security."
