On November 23, a Hong Kong gangster and 4 mainlanders were executed for a string of murders and robberies in Macao and Guangdong, minutes after a Zhuhai court in the south's Guangdong Province was told their appeals had been rejected. The 5 men killed by firing squadincluded Hong Kong kingpin Ye Cheng-jian, 38, and 2 mainland accomplices, He Jingsheng and Li Xinwen, convicted of murder, robberies and kidnappings dating back to 1994. Two other mainlanders, Li Aijun and Zhang Jianhai, were also executed after being convicted of stealing $12.42 million worth of jewellery and watches from goldsmiths and pawn shops in Macao between April and June last year.
