On October 14, the President commuted to life in prison the death penalty sentences of the 3 men who raped a rural schoolteacher before strangling her to death. Estrada approved the recommendation by the "Conscience Committee" to reduce the sentences to life imprisonment. A trial court had sentenced the men to death in 1995.
