On October 14, Mohammed Abacha, 32, was charged along with his father's personal security chief, Maj. Hamza Al-Mustapha, and four other former security operatives, with the murder of Kudirat Abiola, wife of the late millionaire opposition politician Moshood Abiola. The penalty for murder in Nigeria is death by hanging. Lawyer Clement Nwankwo of the Constitutional Rights Project group said: "I think it's very important that those linked to these assassinations should be put through the legal process." But he said his group was opposed to the death penalty in all circumstances and would campaign against the execution of the defendants if found guilty.
