On october 5, 2001 the National Police Agency announced that it has decided to start an intensive campaign against organized crime. It will pay rewards of up to 5 million won ($3,800) to anyone who offers information leading to the arrest of gang members. The decision follows comments from the Millennium Democratic Party urging the eradication of organized crime. Under the law, the head of a criminal organization could face the death penalty, life in jail or a prison term of over 10 years.
