On September 17, lawyer Karpal Singh said that his remarks at the Commonwealth Law Conference were merely intended to drive home the point that an independent and brave judiciary is needed to administer the laws. Karpal said his reference to certain cases was to prove what he calls "executive interference" in the judicial process, and that it should not be construed as demeaning the judiciary. "There can be no denying that in dealing with cases involving the death penalty, a strong and mature Attorney-General and judiciary are a prerequisite," he said in a statement.
