On September 28, the Hanoi Verdict Execution Council put to death a condemned prisoner, Le Van Minh, at the Cau Nga execution site in Tu, Liem District. Le Van Minh - born in 1969 and residing at Pho Cu, Dien Bien town, Lai Chau Province - was sentenced to death for "trafficking in illicit drugs," at the first instance court trial on August 21, 1997. The death sentence was upheld at the appeal on May 11, 1998. On August 2, the President had rejected Minh's petition for amnesty, and on September 15 the Chief Judge of the Hanoi People's Court issued an order for the execution of the verdict.
