On September 28, it was reported that Sudan formally asked for the extradition from Egypt of Abdel Rahman Said, a former army officer who now is deputy commander of National Democratic Alliance (NDA) forces. Sudan claimed his responsibility for damaging the 1,610-km pipeline near Wagoa, northeast of Khartoum, on September 19. Prosecutor Wonan said Said will face 6 charges that include undermining the Constitution and polluting the environment. "Some of these charges carry the death penalty," he added. Said affirmed he was confident that Egypt would not hand him over. An Egyptian foreign ministry official said he was unaware of any Sudanese extradition request.
