On the motion approved by the Italian Senate, asking the government, representing the EU, to present at the UN a resolution for a universal moratorium on executions, HOC President Marco Pannella declared: "A Senate composed of yes men from the majority allowed the Italian government to say that "seeing as there won't be unanimity in Brussels we won't be able to present the resolution at New York". I hope Del Turco, from the opposition, is given credit for having voted the only resolution coherent with the government's declarations.
The government is responsible of having made double sided, disloyal and cheating declarations, in which it said, either out of incapacity or double sidedness, everything and its opposite.
The opposition," Pannella added, "has been loyal to itself and to the commitments which President Silvio Berlusconi announced at the European Parliament and at the UN and which are now being sabotaged out of fickleness by Frattini (Italy's Foreign Minister - Ed.), the government and its coalition members.
In his speech at the UN, Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi, speaking on behalf of the EU as current Presidency holder, asked for the universal abolition of the death penalty and for a general moratorium on executions.
