Only 4% of defendants were sentenced to death in Ohio in 2000, the lowest percentage since records have been kept. The same year, 27% of those convicted of aggravated murder were sentenced to life without parole, the highest number ever. These numbers show a dramatic shift from 1998, when sentences for life and death were nearly even.
