Orange County circuit judge Belvin Perry sentenced John Huggins, 40, to death for the 2nd time for the 1997 kidnapping and murder of Carla Larson, a 30-year-old woman in June 1997Judge Belvin Perry, who overturned Huggins' original conviction and death sentence in 1999 because prosecutors withheld key evidence from the defense, said Huggins' prior felony record and the heinousness of the crime outweighed the killer's arguments against receiving the death sentence.
It's unclear if Huggins will actually face a death sentence, after a June ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court. That ruling centered around an Arizona case and said only juries should decide if a convicted murderer deserves to die.
The state Supreme Court halted executions in early July to consider how the Arizona ruling affects Florida.
