Ottaviano del Turco, senator for the left-wing SDI (Italian Socialist Democrats) and Hands Off Cain member, tabled a parliamentary question on the presentation of a resolution calling for a worldwide moratorium on executions to the UN General Assembly.
"Following the latest EU's General Affairs Council wherefrom emerged unexpected conclusions in relation to those expressed at the same Council in July by some European countries with regard to a European initiative at the UN General Assembly, I invite the Presidency to urgently request the Government to attend a fresh and immediate debate in the Senate on the issue of a worldwide moratorium on the death penalty."
This parliamentary question was particularly important in view of the EU General Affairs Council that was to follow on October 13, 2003 in Luxembourg, that would presumably take the final decision on Europe's will to present the resolution calling for a worldwide moratorium on executions in 2003.
