PAKISTAN: STAY OF EXECUTION

ADPAN (Anti-Death Penalty Asia Network) welcomes the news that the execution of Behram Khan was stayed on 30 June. 
The Pakistan Government has indicated that it maintains its informal policy of  not carrying out death sentences, and the execution is currently postponed until 30 September.
ADPAN reiterates the fact that the execution of Behram Khan would end the progress towards abolishing the death penalty in Pakistan, where no executions have been carried out in the last four years. It may also open the doors for further executions in the future.
It would be the first execution under the current government, an act going against the current regional and global trend against executions, with more than two thirds of the world’s countries having abolished the death penalty in law or in practice.
