Pakistan's Council of Islamic Ideology declared as detrimental to 'Shariat' a Lahore court verdict convicting serial child killer Javed Iqbal to death by strangulation, suffering the same fate as his victims. The council examines all existing laws from the Islamic point of view and advises the government on amendments. Under the constitution, the recommendations of the council go to parliament for legislation. "This verdict can create an impression in the country and abroad that the judgement was in accordance with Islamic injunctions and it may cause misunderstanding about the Islamic Shariat," the council said in a statement. "Whatever the court has reportedly ordered to be done to the corpse is against Islam," the statement said, adding "there are clear instructions in Islam to respect the sanctity of a body, even that of a non-Muslim. Respect for the body of the dead is mandatory."
