Palestinian President Yasser Arafat ordered an inquiry into the death of a Palestinian man who the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) said may have been tortured to death in a Gaza Strip prison run by the Palestinian Authority's military intelligence agency.
PCHR officials said one of their advocates had discovered bruises on Abu Amra's legs, back and wrists when the body was brought to Gaza's Shifa hospital. Palestinian military intelligence officials said Abu Amra died of a heart attack. "There is a suspicion the inmate was exposed to physical torture and therefore we have demanded an investigation," Hamdi Shaqoura of the PCHR told Reuters.
