Paranaque Representative Roilo S. Golez pushed for a higher penalty for firearms pilferage when reports surfaced that several men from the Philippine National Police (PNP) had illegally sold military issued firearms and bullets to Muslim secessionist groups in Mindanao. Golez proposed House Bill 270, which sought to amend Republic Act 7659, the Act to Impose Death Penalty on Certain Heinous Crimes, to include firearms pilferage in the list of heinous crimes. "The act of pilferage of these firearms and explosives and other equipment is a breach of trust - the act can be said to be a crime against national security," Golez said.
