Pathologists examining the bodies of the six death row convicts killed in the bungled escape attempt found an appalling catalogue of injuries, none resembling bullet wounds. The prisoners had fractured arms, legs and joints, all had similar fractures of the skull and some had their eyes gouged out, according to two senior doctors who examined the bodies. The skulls of all six of the prisoners had been crushed "with blunt objects", said Dr Moses Njue, the Central Provincial Pathologist, and Dr L. G. Mburu, the superintendent of Nyeri Provincial General Hospital.
