Pattana Sriwiboon, 38, was sentenced to death after he admitted killing Thaweepong Boonsin, 45, mayor of tambon Tha Phae, on August 22, 2001. Despite his guilty plea, the provincial court said it found no reason to show clemency to Pattana who brutally murdered the mayor in public. However, the court acquitted Narongsak Chulakan, 36, a municipal councillor of tambon Tha Phae charged with being the mastermind, citing insufficient evidence. Pattana said in his guilty plea that he had held a grudge against Thaweepong, and that there was no mastermind behind the plot.
