Philippines President Gloria Arroyo said she was ready to set aside her pro-life stance and adopt an "eye-for-an-eye" policy if only to eliminate kidnapping, drug trafficking, and other crimes.
To let heinous crime offenders die by lethal injection, the President said, is preferable to seeing them summarily killed by lawmen and vigilantes disenchanted with the slow criminal justice system.
"I may have grown up in the convent, but I can understand this eye-for-an-eye, tooth-for-a-tooth, in case of grave crimes. So the death penalty is necessary perhaps for the first one, two, three (convicts)," the President told Net-25 television network in an interview.
