Poland's Prime Minister Marek Belka said that he was against the death penalty but was in favour of life imprisonment without parole. He called reports that certain politicians had demanded for the restoration of the death penalty as a "catchy subject".
"The life sentence with no remission," Prime Minister Marek Belka said, "is essentially the same as the death penalty but without the disadvantages of the death penalty. The biggest disadvantage of it is that it can affect an innocent person. And that is why all countries in Western Europe have abandoned it."
The prime minister recalled that the death penalty had also been abolished in Poland.
Belka urged people not to "get excited by this catchy subject". "The public does not have to be rational, it can be emotional, but a politician should not," he added.
