Polish Prime Minister Marek Belka held out hope for a negotiated settlement in the case of five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor sentenced to death in Libya on charges of spreading AIDS, after talks with Libyan leaders. 
"We raised the question of the Bulgarian nurses with representatives of the Libyan foreign ministry," Belka told reporters in Tripoli.
"This affair has a good chance of a positive outcome in the context of larger plans coordinated by the European Union."
Belka did not give further details but Polish diplomatic sources said that the plans involved the construction by the EU of a hospital in Benghazi, northeastern Libya, to care for the children infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
The Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor were in May condemned to death by a Libyan court, after having been detained for five years, on charges that they had infected some 400 children in a hospital in Benghazi with HIV. All six defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges and two of the nurses and the doctor said during the trial that they were tortured into making confessions.
