President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo commuted the capital sentences of two condemned Edgar Maligaya and Rodrigo Calma to life sentences on the recommendation of Justice Secretary Hernando Perez, saving them from their scheduled execution on March 7. A presidential palace statement said Arroyo had also been informed that the board of pardons was currently reviewing the cases of 17 other death row inmates for "possible commutation of their respective sentences".
