Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra confirmed the government's intention to deny drug traffickers on death row the right to request a royal pardon.
He drew attention to the execution of another convicted drug trader, Suchart Thaokhamthong on June 26, stating that others caught with large amounts of drugs were certain to face the same fate.
Legal experts argue that condemned criminals have a legal right to seek a royal pardon. To deny drug traffickers this right would require changes to the law.
The prime minister agreed the law gave them this right, but said there were ways to ensure His Majesty the King was not bothered by requests for a pardon. He declined to explain further, but insisted everything would be lawful and no legal amendment would be required.
