Prosecutors in Japan demanded the death sentence for the leader of the doomsday cult, Aum Supreme Truth. Shoko Asahara was charged with the deaths of 27 people over several years, including the sarin gas attack on the Tokyo underground railway system in 1995. The chief prosecutor told the court that capital punishment was being insisted upon because of the seriousness of Asahara's crimes.
