Qiao Yanqin was executed in southern China's Guangdong province for his role in the beating to death of a migrant worker in a detention centre. Qiao had worked in a dispensary of the detention facility where the victim Sun Zhigang was held. The brutal murder of Sun Zhigang, a fashion designer from Hubei, on 20 March 2003, provoked widespread outrage but local authorities had initially resisted calls for a thorough inquiry into the crime.
