Regarding the decision made by the directors of three daily newspapers "il Giorno", "La Nazione" and "il Resto del Carlino" to have as their headlines "Death Penaly, yes, yes, yes" in relevance to some of the stances taken following the murder of Sara Jay, the Vice President of the Senate, Ersilia Salvato, said the editorial decision "shows a cynical downfall of justice to the idea of revenge, something very different from our juidicial system". Berselli, a member of parliament for Alleanza Nazionale (a right-wing party) defended the journalists freedom reminding that even 'very civilised' states have the death penalty. The leader of the Democratic Left, Walter Veltroni, found it "alarming and sad that following the wave of emotion over Sara Jay's death there are those who steal the opportunity to re-open the death penalty debate". Cardinal Esilio Tonini stated his surprise regarding speculations as to the possible re-introduction of the death penalty.
