Remand prisoner Kanesan Ratnam was hanged at approximately 6 am in Changi Prison. The 35-year-old had been sentenced to death in February 2001 for killing another inmate, Shankar Suppiahmaniam, 19, because the youth spilt tea on the floor of the cell they shared and refused to clean it up. Kanesan strangled him with a towel and then smothered him with a blanket in Cell B 141 at Queenstown Remand Prison, on August 10, 2001.
