Reports from stragglers coming out of the besieged northern city of Kunduz said the Arab, Chechen, Uzbek and Pakistani volunteers who have been fighting for Bin Laden's cause are in control of the situation, and have summarily executed hundreds of people accused of trying to flee the city.
Another report, however, claimed that 60 Chechen fighters and 40 other "mercenaries" went and drowned themselves in the Amu River rather than face certain extermination at the hands of the Taliban's sworn enemies.
A refugee from Kunduz said a doctor was shot dead for not treating a wounded Taliban soldier quickly enough, while others said a group of eight teenage boys were killed for laughing at Taliban soldiers.
Refugees said terrified civilians were hiding indoors and closing their shops for fear of summary execution.
