Robert Rhoades, now 54, has been formally sentenced to death. A jury on May 15 handed down a death sentence for Rhoades for the April 20, 1984 rape and murder of 18-year-old Julie Connell.
Alameda County Superior Court Joseph Hurley pronounced the sentence in an Oakland courtroom.
Before this case, Rhoades already was on death row for the 1996 torture and murder of 8-year-old Michael Lyons. DNA evidence from the Connell slaying was matched to Rhoades in 1998, when his DNA was collected during the investigation into the murder of Lyons.
