Russia lashed out at Saudi Arabia for handing down light jail sentences to two Chechens who hijacked a Russian plane at knifepoint last year, saying the verdict could make the kingdom look like a "breeding ground for potential terrorists."
A spokesman for the Russian government noted with sarcasm that the Saudis normally stone adulterers to death and amputate the arms of thieves. "It turns out that aircraft theft, which is what hijacking is, was judged as a minor crime compared to stealing a chicken or a wallet," said spokesman Alexei Volin.
Suggesting that the death penalty might have been a more appropriate punishment, he added that the ruling "could make [Saudi Arabia] seem like a kind of breeding ground for potential terrorists."
